In these monthly outdoor drawing and watercolor sessions, we will walk through the ever changing gardens, orchard, fields, woods, and along the lakeshore of The Earthius Project and learn to REALLY SEE who Mother Earth is. We will engage our new "sight" by making quick sketches of interesting angles, compositions, and perspectives. After a group discussion of the pros and cons of each sketch, you will settle down to draw or paint your chosen scene/object in greater detail.
Each session will focus more on a specific subject, but the overall experience will always bring you back to nature. Less emphasis is given on the the skills of drawing and painting and more on the widening and sharpening of our SEEING skills and interpreting the beauty in nature with pencil and paint. While I am a technical painter, I find that the most illuminating and enchanting art is often far from technically true to reality. It is my goal in these sessions to peer with you beyond the concrete reality into a more honest and vulnerable understanding of Mother Earth.
Bring your sketchbook and palette (if you want to expand to painting), a comfortable chair/stool/mat, your mask (required whenever we are within 6 feet of each other), and your curiosity and wonder... it does not really matter what you use or how fancy your supplies are, it matters only that you are open to the experience! These meetups are for any age 14 and up. Young participants are encouraged to attend only if they are truly interested in the visual arts and nature, can maintain attention a full two hours, and have their own art supplies to work independently.
In the Fall of 2021, I will try and arrange for a local exhibition of the work that participants wish to show!
These sessions are donation or work-trade based.
DONATION OPTION: Please support The Earthius Project either as a "Supporter" at $10 per session, as an "Enthusiast" at $20 per session, or as "Committed to Change" at $30 per session. The Enthusiast and Committed to Change supporters will go home with a potted seedling or wildflower seeds, and the Committed to Change participant will additionally have access to the post-meetup, online Zoom call in which I will do a live tutorial on painting out one of my own sketches from the in-person meetup. It is also a great opportunity to receive constructive feedback from other participants.
WORK-TRADE OPTION: If you wish to volunteer your time instead, you can work-trade on The Earthius Project for one hour in lieu of each $10 donation level. So to achieve the "Committed to Change" level, for example, you would work-trade a minimum of 3 hours. Work-trade tasks might include things like planting out seedlings, hauling woodchips with a wheelbarrow, cleaning out the chicken coup, weeding, or any other task that needs doing for which you have the skills or interest in learning. You can work-trade after the meetup or arrange another time.
Please indicate on your RSVP which option and level you are choosing.
You can give your donation safely via Venmo @earthius, CashApp $earthius, or in cash at the time of the meetup. Donations and work-trade are per person, even if you are under 18.
Your donation ensures the further development and survival of The Earthius Project, which is a demonstration site for the application and teaching of regenerative earthkeeping, permaculture practices, and holistic water management. The Project is also committed to reconnecting the public with earth and nature via art, photography, gardening, permaculture, and community building.
